Choosing the Right Micron for Your Project
Micron count determines how soft or structured a wool fibre feels against the skin:
14.5 – 18.5 Micron (Ultra-Fine Merino): Exceptionally soft and quick to felt. Best for next-to-skin wear like scarves, shawls, and baby wear.
23 Micron (Medium Merino & Blends): Versatile and durable, available in rich dyed shades for vibrant felting details, spinning, and weaving.
26–30+ Micron (Corriedale & Specialty Wools): Sturdier fibres with natural springiness. Excellent for 3D sculptured needle felting, outer garments, and durable homewares.

What is the difference between Ashford and World of Wool fibres?
Both brands represent global benchmarks in fibre quality. Ashford (New Zealand) is famous for its clean, reliable craft wools and Corriedale ranges, while World of Wool (UK) offers extensive custom blends, including many of our own unique blends, fine Merino shades and specialty luxury fibres.
Can I mix different fibre types (like silk and Merino) in wet felting?
Yes. Non-felting natural fibres like silk, rayon, or linen can be trapped within a layer of felting wool (such as fine Merino) during the wet felting process to create high-contrast shine and surface texture, often referred to as Nuno felting.
