For over 25 years, our historic boutique has served as a beloved destination across the Hilltops and Canberra regions. We seamlessly bridge the past and the present, running a bustling heritage storefront in Young, NSW alongside an online retail space that ships premium, plastic-free collections all across Australia.
The Humble Beginnings (1995)
Our narrative began in 1995 under the original name The Wool Room Country Store. It was founded just outside of town by our original founder, whose profound passion for raw roving and traditional wool crafts drove the vision to support Australian heritage.
Following a successful exhibition at the historic final Moore Park run of the Royal Easter Show, a small mail-order business was launched that quickly evolved. A rustic, farm-gate shop operating seven days a week opened inside a newly built two-stand wool shed on the family property. Operating alongside a local sheep stud breeding fine Gromark sheep, this unique space allowed our founder to educate visitors about the biological benefits of wool while supplying premium raw fleece to regional hand-spinners and crafters.
As demand grew for a wholesale range of fine Merino products, the venture quickly outgrew the farm gates, supplying over 30 other retailers across the country.

During an exciting era of retail growth in the 2000s, our current ownership team joined the shop floor, developing a comprehensive, hands-on mastery of wool crafts and natural textiles. Immersed in the pure, honest textures of earth-born materials, our team witnessed firsthand how genuine wool breathes, insulates, and respects the skin in ways that petroleum-based synthetics never could.
This shared passion paved the way for a perfect transition when ownership officially passed the torch in 2014, allowing the original founder to return full-time to the family farm and genetics sheep stud.
Our Historic Main Street Paddock
To better serve an expanding community of creators, the boutique successfully transitioned from the farm paddock into a permanent storefront located at 221 Boorowa Street in the heart of Young, NSW.
Operating out of this beautiful heritage building, the historic storefront adds a rustic, charming character to our boutique. It has cemented the shop as a famous regional tourist stopover, an essential piece of local history, and a vibrant focal point of the town’s main street.

The Modern Evolution: No Plastics, Ever.
Under our current leadership, the business shortened its name to The Wool Room and evolved far beyond a local haberdashery. We expanded the storefront’s horizons globally by building and growing our online store, ensuring natural fibre purists nationwide could access curated, high-quality goods.
We sharpened the boutique’s eco-conscious focus, drawing a definitive line in the sand: pure natural fibres only, with absolutely no acrylic, polyester or microplastics. In a modern textile market flooded with cheap, scratchy synthetic blends that pollute our oceans, we have fiercely preserved the store as a rare sanctuary where nothing is artificial.
